Plastic Surgery - Nose Job Correction

Rhinoplasty is one of the popular plastic surgery techniques performed to enhance the shape of the nose. Other name for rhinoplasty surgery is the 'nose job'. There are various steps involved in the rhinoplasty surgery procedure. First step in the procedure is the assessment of the nasal region. The deformities in the nasal region, bones around the region, connected nerves, nasal skin and anatomy and recovery period will be assessed by the surgeon carefully. After this, the right surgery technique will be selected to deal with the particular problem. If it is small then the surgeon will go for closed rhinoplasty otherwise open rhinoplasty will provide the desired results.

Primary rhinoplasty: This term is used when the nose job needs multiple surgery procedures for treating single nasal problem. Generally the first rhinoplasty surgery is named as primary rhinoplasty. The nasal deformities such as aesthetic corrections and other minor problems can be treated easily with a single surgery. But this is not always the case. The nasal deformities caused due to traumatic injury will lead to excessive bleeding and breathing problems. In these cases the major complication will be treated first and aesthetic goals will be left for the secondary rhinoplasty procedure.

Secondary rhinoplasty: Improvement in the surgery is the important goal. If we are not happy with the shape with the first surgery it is better to receive secondary rhinoplasty. In some critical nasal deformities it is not possible to correct everything in a single surgery. In those cases primary surgery will focus only on fixing the health related issues. Other issues such as restoring the shape and size to the original position will be done in the secondary rhinoplasty. It is more complicated compared to the primary nose job, because it involves more incision on the same region. The time period between the two surgeries is another important factor to be considered. Secondary rhinoplasty should be performed only after complete recovery from the first.

Functional rhinoplasty: The main purpose of this surgery technique is to restore the normal functioning of the nose. The problems such as displacement of the nasal septum, nasal bone crash and dislocated cartilage bones and a deformed dorsum will be treated under functional or reconstructive rhinoplasty. The congenital deformities include breathing problems, twists in the septum, columella damage and so on. A deformed dorsum can be restored by using external bones that is from other regions of the body. Usually cartilage bones from the ear, excess cartilage between the nasal path and grafts will be used to restore the dorsum.

Next is the recovery phase. After completing the surgery, the nasal region will be protected using splints and dressing to avoid movements. These external splints will be left for 3 days to fix the bones. Swelling may appear in these days and it is considered very common. The effects of swelling will be reduced gradually with the medications prescribed by the surgeon. It usually takes 4 to 5 days to remove sutures if involved and the complete recovery time will vary based on the type of the surgical method and complication.
